SNÆFELLAS PENINSULA // ICELAND

iceland

Approaching our final leg of the journey, we visit the amazing Snæfellsnes peninsula on the west coast of Iceland. Located a short distance from Iceland’s capital, this is still Iceland’s best kept secret with the peninsula being light on tourists and heavy in natural beauty. This area has everything in a compact package; picturesque mountains with moss and shrubs outcroppings, a large volcano, glaciers, black sand beaches and rolling grasslands.

Our trip into the peninsula starts with a drive across from coast to coast on Route 54 to visit Búðakirkja, the Black Church - nestled on the shores of the Atlantic, standing in isolation, surrounded by snow capped mountains. It is truly a sight to behold! Next we drive over to the other side of the peninsula to check out Kirkjufell, the Church Mountain, a pyramid shaped unique looking mountain. Checking out the waterfalls around the foot of the mountain, we continue over to the black volcanic beaches of Djúpalónssandur, a national park, stopping by a few dormant and active volcanoes.
